Whatever Happened to Justice? How the Guilty Elude Punishment, WILL NOT be published in 2009 by Kunati Books, because Kunati just went out of business.
I was editing the "page proofs" - the last step before the printer - when I received the news. (I put quotes in there because my page proofs, unlike Jennifer 8. Lee's in that last link, were virtual rather than physical. I was working on the pdf of a not-yet-existent book.)
I suppose it was better to have the company fold immediately before the book was released rather than immediately after. Unopened boxes of books in the distributor's warehouse have exactly the same impact on the reading world as no book at all, but they might have rather more impact on the author's subsequent literary career:
"What were the sales of his last book?"
"Let's put it this way. His next one is absolutely guaranteed to sell better."
This isn't necessarily the end of the line. Now my agent Claire Gerus can offer a truly prêt-à-porter book to some lucky publisher. The writing, the editing, the design, the typesetting, even the cover -- it was all done on someone else's dime.
